In 1964, Exeter-based band Four Steps Beyond arrived at RG Jones Recording Studios to cut a demo. Their manager, Brian Roberts, brought along a cine camera and filmed the session — an unheard-of move at the time.
The footage reveals a raw, all-analogue session with glimpses inside the control room, including a young Robin Jones, son of Ronald Godfrey Jones, behind the mixing desk.
“There’s the odd shot of me,” Robin recalls. “Play it real loud for the full experience!”
Tragically, lead singer Colin Wilde died just weeks later in a car crash. The video stands today as both a record and a tribute.
Technical Setup: Mono valve ¼ inch tape deck, ribbon mics — all mixed live.
