Live Broadcast Meets Gothic Theatre 

In 2011, RG Jones Sound Engineering was asked to provide complete live audio production for one of the BBC’s most ambitious broadcast experiments to date:
Frankenstein’s Wedding… Live in Leeds. 

Part gothic drama, part live concert, and part immersive theatre, this BBC Three live TV special transformed the medieval ruins of Kirkstall Abbey into a hauntingly beautiful soundstage—broadcast in real time to a national audience and performed before 12,000 live attendees. 

The Monster Broadcast 

The production reimagined the classic tale of Victor Frankenstein and Elizabeth Lavenza with a sharp contemporary edge. The audience, dressed as wedding guests, became part of the story—congregants witnessing the doomed union. The show combined live action, pre-recorded film, contemporary music performances, and immersive audience choreography, culminating in a one-night-only televised event unlike anything before. 

RG Jones’ remit was to support this hybrid broadcast experience with a powerful yet discreet live sound system capable of: 

• Supporting live vocals, spoken word, and orchestration 
• Reinforcing contemporary music tracks and cues 
• Ensuring clear and intelligible audio across the full abbey site 
• Accommodating both the TV production’s multi-feed broadcast mix and the on-site audience sound experience 

Multi-Disciplinary Coordination 

This wasn’t your average live gig. The event involved: 

• BBC Studios & Post Production 
• Phoenix Dance Theatre (choreographing the mass dance finale) 
• 12,000 audience members acting as extras and guests 
• A cast of prominent actors including: 
• • Lacey Turner as Elizabeth 
  • David Harewood as The Creature 
  • Andrew Gower as Victor 

The RG Jones team worked closely with BBC engineers to coordinate FOH and monitor systems while also facilitating clean feeds for broadcast, stage management cues, and real-time audio transitions between live and pre-recorded content.
